5 Things We Know About the Thirteenth Doctor's Debut Season

Posted by Doctor Who Store Staff on Jan 30th 2018

Since Jodie Whittaker was cast in the role of The Doctor, there has been months of buzz about the changes coming to Doctor Who.  Steven Moffat's departure was only the tip of the iceburg.  To make it easier for Whovians to root through all of the info, we've gathered these five major points about the upcoming Doctor Who season.

#1:  The New Companions

It looks like we might soon be cheering on a new "Team TARDIS".  It was announced that three actors were to be featured in the upcoming series 11 alongside Whittaker. Bradley Walsh (long-rumored to have been cast) will be appearing as Graham and newcomers Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill will be appearing as Ryan and Yasmin.

At this time, no further details have been released about the trio, but we are happy to see how varied the casting already is for the upcoming season.

#2:  The Costume

A bit Bowie, a bit Mork-ish, most definitely 1970s-inspired, Jodie Whittaker's debut look has ignited conversation all over the fandom.  While many guessed that Whittaker's look would have a menswear flare to it, the decided upon costume definitely makes her Doctor stand out from those in the past.  Practical, trendy (yes, palazzos are in), and detail oriented, fans cannot get over her outfit - namely if that coat is gray or a purple/blue.

#3:  "Lots of Planets Have a North"

Not since Christopher Eccleston graced our screens as the Ninth Doctor have we had a Doctor with a Northern accent in the series.  Whittaker hails from Yorkshire (which is in Northern England), and many fans wanted her to keep her native accent.  This year's Christmas episode "Twice Upon a Time" confirmed that Whittaker was using her own voice for the character.  After all, a relate-able Doctor is the best kind.

#4:  A Change of Format

Instead of twelve 45-minute episodes like we're used to seeing, ten 50-minute episodes will be produced for series 11 of Doctor Who.  The first of these episodes will be extended to 60 minutes to fully introduce the new characters.  In an interesting twist, there may be an 11th episode in the upcoming series as referenced in a BBC merchandising advert.  This extra episode might be merely referencing the usual Christmas Special that we've long come to expect out of the series, but we will just have to wait and see.

#5:  Plot Speculation

After we were left with the Thirteenth Doctor plunging out of the TARDIS to a fate unknown, speculation has run rampant as to how Whittaker's debut season will be structured.  Some have theorized that she will be stuck on Earth (at least for a bit) to ease into the introduction of her character and those of her companions.  Other sources say it isn't that simple due to an episode that is currently being filmed and is set in the past.

However her story unfolds, we are beyond excited to see what Whittaker (and the Doctor Who production team) have in store for us this coming fall.
